Sey Hollo (2011) Growth [EP]
Like a lot of listeners of Post-rock I have fallen in love with a lot of piano based songs, one such reason is that it sounds good for what the band or artist is trying to portray, another is that it's easy on the old ear buds and 'Growth' by Sey Hollo is no exception to the reasons. Hailing from the north of Sweden Sey Hollo is the work of Sebastian Larsson, a very much literal one man band as it were.
Drawing heavily on the piano as a tool for his expressionism, Sey Hollo has produced a gem of a release, It has everything essentially you want in an EP, effort, feeling, solidity and most important of all a catchy tune. The only real problem with this EP is that its a bit too heavy on reference voices layered behind the song, most heard in the song World Trade Center, and as this is an upcoming trend that I quite like, notably in bands like Maybeshewill or M83 a couple songs just over do it.
Don't let that deter you, the opening song Eunoia is for the better part well balanced, catchy and a foot tapper, and of course the highlight of the album in my ears which would be Vita Si Chakula, a beautiful piece which will do all the speaking for itself, This is a song for lovers of Asobi Seksu, its haunting chorus and rustic feel is probably the pinnacle of this EP.
This EP is worth a listen for fans of the aforementioned bands, or people trying to get into the softer, minimalistic side of post-rock. However don't be expecting perfection, its still a growing piece of work but the potential is there.
